DONG Energy

Introduction:
DONG Energy was founded in 2006 as the result of a merger involving six Danish energy companies ?DONG, Elsam, ENERGI E2, Nesa, Copenhagen Energy’s power activities and Frederiksberg Forsyning.

Activities throughout the value chain
Before the merger, the six companies that make up DONG Energy were active in different links of the energy supply chain ?from exploration for and production of oil and natural gas and the generation of electricity at power stations and renewable energy facilities to the distribution of electricity and gas ?all the way up to contacts with end-users through marketing, sales and energy consultancy.

Exploration for and production of oil and natural gas

Since 1984, DONG has explored for and produced oil and natural gas and, as a state-owned company, has established Denmark’s natural gas infrastructure. Subsequently, DONG has owned and operated the natural-gas distribution grids in Southern Jutland, West Zealand and South Zealand. In addition, DONG has established renewable energy facilities and, after the deregulation of the electricity market, has actively participated in energy trading.

Power stations and international wind-power projects

Elsam has amassed more than 50 years of experience generating electricity by virtue of 7 primary power stations and 14 small-scale power stations in Jutland and Funen. The same is true of ENERGI E2 which ?by virtue of its 7 primary power stations and 10 small-scale power stations and international wind-power projects ?has been generating electricity in East Denmark for more than 50 years. Since the 1970s, both companies have converted their production processes and facilities: by switching from solely being based on oil to multi-tiered sources of energy; by introducing the world’s most efficient coal-fired process (also recycling residual products from the process); by amassing international cutting-edge expertise in wind energy; and by developing the use of waste and straw as energy resources.

Trading on North European energy markets
Concurrent with the deregulation of the energy markets in the EU’s Member States, DONG Energy has increased its own international activities significantly and is now an international energy company focusing on the North European energy markets. DONG Energy supplies energy to customers in the Danish, Swedish, German and Dutch markets and trades in energy on European energy exchanges. DONG Energy has access to long-term energy supplies and infrastructure in Denmark and abroad, to ensure a convenient, flexible supply of energy.

Supplying electricity to North Zealand and Greater Copenhagen

The history of the three power utilities ?Nesa, Copenhagen Energy and Frederiksberg Forsyning ?goes back to the beginnings of power generation in the early 20th century. Since then, these three utilities have developed the power supply grid to include all of North Zealand, the city of Roskilde and Greater Copenhagen. Since the deregulation of the electricity market, the three utilities have also been selling electricity and related services to customers outside the utilities?own grid districts as well and have furthered developed a powerful profile in the fields of energy consultancy, customer service and reliable energy supplies.
