The University of Hong Kong has recently identified Sustainable Water as one of its strategic research themes. Our goal is to promote interdisciplinary research, as well as interactions among academics, governments and the private sectors. The initial focus is on sustainable and safe water supplies for the Pearl River Delta region, which covers an area of about 40,000 km2 with a population of over 30 million (of which Hong Kong represents 1,100 km2 and 7 million). The remarkable economic growth of the region in the past 25 years has exerted much pressure on water supplies for the region.
